Ugh…today’s goal is a hard one, but one that is ultimately for the best. Unfortunately, I love fast food. My favorites are McDonald’s and Taco Bell. We are not exactly “close” to either (remember…rural living), so often I visit when I am out running errands and doing other things in the area.
Well, life was good until this past Friday. As part of our “pizza and movie” night, we watched the movie Food, Inc. Well, let me tell you that now I know too much about where my food comes from (which is probably good and bad all at the same time), and I can’t see how eating McDonald’s or Taco Bell is really in my interest anymore.
It’s really too bad that something that tastes (in my opinion, although my husband does not share this opinion) so good is really so bad for you!
If you haven’t already watched Food, Inc., I think it’s definitely worth watching. But beware, you will never look at your food the same again!
So, after my “last supper” at Taco Bell for lunch today, I am now bidding it and the yummy McDonald’s double cheeseburger farewell. It’s been fun while it lasted.
Today’s goal is two fold: 1) Stop eating fast food, and 2) Buy local food. This means planning ahead for when I will be out and about, and changing times that I run errands to be before or after mealtimes, instead of centered around the mealtime! It also means that I will now be looking for quality local meats, from local farms, as well as shopping at the farmer’s markets when they come back in a few months. Until then, I am going to be shopping based on what is in season (and therefore traveled the least distance to be sitting in front of me at the grocery store, where, to borrow a line from Food, Inc., “there are no seasons”). I’m also going to try to cut down on processed foods.
Already, I have cut down on my grocery bill, by eliminating many processed foods and cooking from scratch, but the local meat and veggies will undoubtedly raise my grocery bill a bit. I’m still going to try my best and be creative in the kitchen to make sure that the grocery bill does not get too high. But, that may have to wait for another post…
Until tomorrow…I’m off to finish painting my master bedroom sliding door so that we can put the shades back on so my husband can sleep in the morning…

P.S. Another great source on this topic is the book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. I read it earlier this year and would highly recommend it!

Hi Laura,
My 16-year-old daughter was shown Food Inc. in one of her classes in school. She felt the same as you and declared that she is ready to move to Italy (her dream) and start growing all of her own food.
For learning how to eat a healthy diet, I love The Weston A. Price Foundation’s information (http://www.westonaprice.org/). And for a great eating plan based on these principles, try Isabel De Los Rios’ Diet Solution Program (http://www.thedietsolutionprogram.com/).

Christine
I know it’s a bit scary Christine! But, better to be informed and make better choices. Thanks for the resources!
To your success,
