This week I replaced the outdoor Christmas lights (that had been broken since last year, and were on the house all year!) with new LCD lights, so that they will use much less energy and will last longer.
We have had problems every year with burned out lights, and last year we finally went for an LCD Christmas tree. We loved it so much that I splurged and bought LCD lights for the outside of our house to replace the older variety that we have had for several years.
So, after lots of boxes of lights…

I finally was able to finish my Renovation Thursday front yard project! It’s been several weeks in the making.
First, I am took off all the rocks, then pulled the weeds, removed the weed barrier, planted new plants, put down a new weed barrier, and replaced the rocks (after power washing them).
If you remember from part 1, here’s the beginning picture of weed central:
Once all the rocks were removed, and weeds pulled, then I worked on the weed barrier. I wanted to create a pattern.
So, first I rolled out the weed barrier:

For the next several weeks (weather permitting) on Renovation Thursday I will be working outside. I’m finally able to tackle the front yard area. Unfortunately, it is a project that will take several days of working.

This week on Renovation Thursday I was relegated back inside from rain. Lots of rain.
So, I took the time to repair our vanity door. The vanity door was loose and the screws had been completely stripped, so I couldn’t get it adjusted any tighter. And, once I started the repair, I found out that someone had glued the screws into the frame, so I had to pull them out. This made it impossible to put new screws in, because now the holes were too big. So, I improvised.
I collected my tools:

This week on Renovation Thursday I took advantage of the nice warm weather to pull some weeds and put in some trees.
Weeds are not exactly my favorite thing to do, but I do like how the flowers look after I have weeded. And in this case, I was able to see that there were actually flowers there after all underneath all those weeds.
Here’s the mess before:

This week on Renovation Thursday I fixed our swing set slide. Last fall, we had a huge wind storm that knocked down several trees. One of the trees landed on our swing set slide and completely ripped the bolts out of the base of the slide.
After looking at it, I was happy to realize that it might be salvageable. After clearing off the pine tree, and putting it upright, I just needed some way to connect the slide to the base again, as the bolts had been ripped out. So, I drilled a hole above . . . → Read More: Renovation Thursday – Slide Repair

This week on Renovation Thursday I fixed the plumbing on the master bathroom sink. Despite having thrown many different things down the drain in an attempt at getting the water running better, nothing worked. So, it was time to take apart the plumbing, give it a good thorough cleaning and put it all back together again.
I had been procrastinating on this one on purpose, because the thought of cleaning out the pipes did not appeal to me. In fact, I saved this project for the day before we left on a trip – and then I . . . → Read More: Renovation Thursday – Plumbing 101

This week on Renovation Thursday I am getting prepared for the outdoor work that is coming up on my schedule (below). There is a lot of it, and it would be really helpful to have a working wheelbarrow. Our poor wheelbarrow has had a flat tire for about a year. I thought about changing it…once or twice…but never got around to it.
Good thing I didn’t either, because in talking to our neighbor, he saw the aforementioned wheelbarrow and told me to get a solid rubber wheel for replacement, instead of a hollow air-filled one. So, back . . . → Read More: Renovation Thursday – Sink and Wheelbarrow

This week on Renovation Thursday I looked up and saw my nice red lights in the kitchen and decided I needed to change them. They are beautiful lights, and really add some color to the kitchen, but I need more light, so I had to switch them out (and now I listed the red lights for sale on my Becoming Minimalist Sale for some lucky buyer!).
I chose to get the same basic light we had already installed over the sink, and thankfully, Home Depot still carried that same exact light (six years after the light over . . . → Read More: Renovation Thursday – Kitchen Island Lights

This week on Renovation Thursday I worked on a few little things that needed to be done.
Somehow in the kitchen backsplash tiling project, one of our GFCI outlets got messed up and wouldn’t reset anymore, so I needed to install another one. Since I’m fairly comfortable with minor electrical work like changing outlets and light switches, I was able to do this one quickly and now we have a working outlet again.
